Future Flying Cars

Sponsored Links

Future flying cars have intrigued people for decades. But, people still kept yearning for future flying cars, the kind like a regular automobile, but one that could put people above the angst of rush hour traffic, highway closures, detours and traffic jam causing accidents. For instance, the Moller flying car ( see the picture above ) is just one such vehicle with its four ethanol driven rotary engines that can either drive like a car or take off like a Harrier jet. The latest rendition is the Moller Skycar M400, which is taking preorders and is expected to make its commercial debut by 2009 or 2010.So future flying cars are not that much into the future. Within a couple of short years, your future flying car may be your present everyday car and flying will be as commonplace as honking your horn at another driver is today. What do you think…?

It’s a lovely dream but there are several real world problems that won’t go away:

    1. The design requirements are in conflict. Flying vehicles require light weight materials for energy conservation while road vehicles require mass to take the punishment of ground travel

    2. Control in three space requires far more skill than in two space. Think of all the drivers you would rather not see cruising overhead

    3. The energy (fuel) budget to remain airborne is inherently greater, ergo, more expensive than for ground transport.

How do you police such saucers? Are we going to furnish the Cops with a flying cars too?
Although it sounds useful, it is not practical in sense, will such cars hover above other cars or above the network of wires that power all the lights and the phone lines?
Flying cars will cause distraction to road bound vehicles does causing more wrecks than needed.

How are you suppose to keep these flying cars from hitting power lines, hitting bridges, running into each other and finding a place to park. Then you have prop wash from the fans or propellers pushing air and the noise of those fans. If this thing stops running while going to work over populated areas both the pilot and anyone unlucky enough to be under it would die. However, it might be interesting as a new type of sport plane and flown with licensed pilots under FAA rules.

I can only hope that I’ll get the chance to drive one in my lifetime. Bring em on, I say! The sooner the better!

    Sounds like a dream but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
If we can’t stay between painted lines on two dimensions, what will happen in three dimensions with no lines at all? We are talking air traffic control nightmare. These things will be falling out of the sky like flies in a flit factory!

The only hope would be to relinquish control to a computerized central navigation system before becoming airborne. Something like punch in destination coordinates, then push auto pilot and sit back. What fun could that be?

For over twenty years Moller has offered to the public his future view and current itteration of his concept flying car. I have personally been watching and hoping for Molliers introduction of a practical working model… I have, from the sidelines, been cheering the developement of a working vehicle since I first blew over $50.00 on Molliers literature package and VHS tapes of the then current tethered “flying” model and futeristic non flying 2 and 4 place concept models. I was then was encuraged with contact calls to plunk down a measly $5000 purchase deposit on a SOON th be released pie in the sky production vehicle. The release of which has yet to happen much to my regret. Seems as though Mollier is a dead end… LOTS of ideas and concepts but no practical follow through. The supposed ONLY sticking point on a fully functional vehicle when I first was bitten by the flying car bug was a favorable horsepower to weight ratio engine. that “problem” was resolved and then other things were then the break point of the project… Possably the flying dynamics of a (then) six or eight ducted fan engined craft. Surely by now computer modeling could solve this relatively minor glitch. I am not cognizent of the latest developement glitch, possably an engine that runs on shreded paper money???

  8. Alon 05 Sep 2007 at 2:37 am

I really do not think that Moller will ever get his vehicle into production. I have been reading articles about his “flying car” since I was a teen and I’m 56 now. I can still remember when he took out ads in the back of Popular Mechanics and Popular Science looking for investors. He still keeps taking money from investors and keeps building prototypes, but he never flies them without a tether. I believe that he is sincere, but he just can’t seem to land on a workable design.

If and when a “flying car” does come to market, it will be over-priced, over-regulated and NOT from Moller. It will be just like the private jets of today. It will be for the elite and only the elite so they can soar above us once again.

We will probably be riding horses due to gas shortages.

  10. S.Kendallon 05 Sep 2007 at 1:50 pm

I do not believe it would be possible to have this great dream of a flying car happen in just a couple of years from now. Individuals would have to take flying lessons to get a pilots license. We don’t want people crashing down onto homes, buildings, and killing people because of not knowing how to fly. Winter storms, thunder storms,
and high winds would make a flying car very dangerous. Government
regulation to be put in place for safety of the people above and below.
I see this as quite a few years away from the debut date. Look how wide this concept car is. How do you fit that on a normal road or highway with normal cars. Major restructering of roadways would have to take place and that would take years upon years to accomplish if approved. All in all though, I would love to see a flying car some day but I know it will not be in my life time to be a commercial entity.

  11. BeeQueenon 05 Sep 2007 at 2:02 pm

Nice idea, but instead of idiot drivers, we will now have to endure idiot fliers. Its a crash waiting to happen. Like Chicken Little said, “The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!!!!!!!!”

  12. R Joneson 05 Sep 2007 at 2:12 pm

Pretty absurd, can you imagine taxing or driving an auto plane in traffic as one would have to do at some time , exposing it to any damage(large or small)from any or all sources of potential(drunks for one) that would render it unairworthy, finding an A&P certified aircraft mechanic and buying parts ,fixing the problem in any time reasonable time period, not to mention the cost, or the other alternate having people flying unairworthy aircraft above the traffic. the carnage would purt an end to this concept in a NY second.
Airplanes are aluminum or composit material and cars are steel and composit material, planes have to be light enough to fly!!DUH.

  13. Mike Nehraon 05 Sep 2007 at 2:21 pm

For Me, I think it is a great idea but like anything else when muptiple flying vehicles are involved, traffic becomes a problem.
In the movie “The Fifth Element” traffic both horizontal and vertical seems to create havoc in a major city environment. I flew helicopters in Vietnam so this idea fasinates me. Teaching the elderly would be quite a chalenge.

Flying cars may be impractical, but NASA has been working on personal aircraft that will be affordable, safe, easy to fly, and very practical. Check out NASA’s SATS program, which is developing not only the innovative plane designs, but also working on the computer-based navigation systems (similar to new systems beginning to show up in current aircraft) and a completely new, satellite-based air traffic control system that is already slated to replace the current radar-driven system over the next 5 years (I think). You probably wouldn’t need these vehicles for short commutes, but “short” gains a different definition at a couple hundred miles per hour!

  15. JPon 05 Sep 2007 at 5:41 pm

Good idea.. How about flying SUV or Mini Van? That would be fun to see it crashing all over the place..

  16. Kyle Bon 05 Sep 2007 at 6:13 pm

some of you have the right idea…

everyone keeps worrying about the 3rd direction of movement like the DOL or the FAA would ever let you fly one of these things.

think about it… when you were 5 your bike had training wheels, and now you tow that fishing boat behind that F250? there’s probably going to be at least a little training don’t ya think? and as far as the “traffic control ‘nightmare,’” it would be taken care of with directional altitude requirements just like commercial jets do now.
never fly on a quarter tank.
    wear a helmet.
you break you buy (and that includes collateral damage)

and for the powerlines: powerlines are lower than trees. if you are flying that low you have bigger problems homeboy.

my only concern is in the event of a stall or a mid-air malfunctions, would our required altitude be high enough for parachute deployment???

  17. crap0001on 06 Sep 2007 at 9:46 am

This type of vehicle belongs in airshows only. If any of these flying cars should fall out of the sky and land on people homes or people themselves like your husband, boyfriend, kids, mother, father, brother, sister, girfriend you will not be too happy with the end results.

Don’t be so greedy to make money and generate further detroying of this planet.

I designed a vehicle capable of going on Land, on water and in the air. My hope is to sell my vehicle to the public and military.
(USA hopefully but if not any country will do.)
I think its about time flying cars are actually being considered a viable means of transportation. It will free up our roads a bit it will create countless jobs at the same time it will expand cities and make emergency resues easier and swifter. I invision possibly having Fire fighter crews with their own vehicles which can fly and hover safely over a fire dropping thousands of gallons of retardent, exstinguishing it much quicker than an ordinary land unit could.
The doors such a vehicle would open far exceed the ones it’d inevitable close. Not to mention when you remove humans from driving and input artifical intelligence to drive accidents will go way down while efficiency will go way up.
My vehicle is designed to run only on Hydrogen cause I think there are a number a hurdles to scale while pollution is at the top of the list. Another concern is safety, while another is ,”dirtying the skyline”, sort of unsightly seeing hundreds of mini-aircraft buzzing along the horizon. I think I have an elegant solution for that one too, Paint.
Yes just as a shark uses bi-tonal colors to camo itself so can be done with a flying vehicle. Paint the top side a bright color for rescue purposes and paint the underside the color of the sky thereby reducing the crafts visual imprint to spectators below. Ahh yes we welcome you future.. Professional questions (or answers) call: 630-308-6324 ask for mike..
