Chrysler’s Car models with in-car WiFi

Chrysler is gonna equip their 2009 car models with in-car WiFi system, making it possible for the driver and passengers to stay connected on the Internet while they’re inside the car. The WiFi system will be part of the next-gen UConnect system, that comes with a 3G-to-WiFi router hidden inside the car. (The UConnect system allows Bluetooth connectivity and MP3 player integration with teh car’s stereo)
This means that the Internet connection will rely on the cellular 3G network, which you’ll need to insert a 3G-capable SIM card into the 3G-to-WiFi router, in order to get connected to the Internet. And the router provides wireless connections to passengers who’ve got their laptops or UMPCs aside, so they can always stay connected to the Internet. Keeping their blogs frequently updated, always connected with their Facebook accounts etc.
Of course, you’ll need to pay for a monthly subscription fee for the 3G service, which should be the same price that you pay for the one used within your USB 3G/HSDPA modem. Chrysler says the system will provide a 600-800kbps download speed and 200kbps of upload speed, which is much lower than the HSPA offers.
The system will also work with game consoles in vehicles with with rear-seat monitors. It’s still unsure Chrysler will provide the 3G Internet service by their own, or they will pass it to another provider. But the pricing of the system will be more or less like the WLAN PC cards, and most probably they will not have any long-term contract to bind you! Besides, the system also comes an in-car 30GB hard drive that lets you store all the downloaded contents.
The move of Chrysler is hope to build a super-connected society that everyone can be connected and the car that passes by you, will be a WiFi hotspot by itself.
